History of Tampa

Tampa is a city located on the west coast of Florida, in the United States. The area that is now Tampa was originally inhabited by various indigenous peoples for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived in Florida, and in the 18th century, the area that is now Tampa was part of the Spanish Empire.

In 1849, the first post office was established in Tampa, and in 1855, the city was incorporated. During the Civil War, Tampa served as an important supply port for the Confederacy.

After the Civil War, Tampa continued to grow, with the development of the cigar industry. Thousands of Cuban immigrants came to Tampa to work in the cigar factories, and the city became known as the “Cigar Capital of the World”. By the early 20th century, Tampa was the largest cigar-producing city in the world.

During the 20th century, Tampa continued to grow and diversify its economy. In 1971, the first phase of the Tampa International Airport was completed, which helped to increase tourism to the area.

Today, Tampa is a thriving city with a population of over 400,000 people. It is home to a diverse range of industries, including healthcare, finance, and tourism. The city is also known for its sports teams, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team and the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team.

Armature Works

Armature Works is a historic building turned food hall located in the heart of Tampa’s waterfront district. The building was originally a trolley barn in the early 1900s and was later used as a storage facility for the city’s streetcars.

Today, Armature Works is a popular destination for foodies and locals looking for a unique dining experience. The building has been beautifully restored and transformed into a multi-level space that houses dozens of food and drink vendors, as well as a co-working space and event venue.

Sparkmans Wharf 

Sparkman’s Wharf is a popular dining and entertainment destination located on the Tampa waterfront. The wharf features a variety of restaurants and bars, each with their own unique atmosphere and cuisine.

In addition to dining options, Sparkman’s Wharf also features a variety of outdoor spaces and activities, including a large lawn area, a waterfront park, and a dog park. The wharf also hosts regular events and activities, such as outdoor movies, live music, and fitness classes.

Tampa Riverwalk

The Tampa Riverwalk is a popular pedestrian walkway that runs alongside the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa. The Riverwalk is a scenic path that offers stunning views of the city skyline and waterfront, and connects several of Tampa’s most popular attractions, including museums, parks, and restaurants.

The Riverwalk stretches for 2.6 miles and includes several noteworthy landmarks, such as the Tampa Convention Center, the Tampa Bay History Center, and the Florida Aquarium. Visitors can also enjoy a leisurely stroll through Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park or take a ride on the Pirate Water Taxi to explore the Riverwalk from the water.

How to Get Around Tampa

Tampa is a city that is very easily navigated with numerous options that all connect to one another, making it not only convenient but fun and adventurous. The historic trolley are very useful as a means of transportation for downtown Tampa and are a big bonus during major events.

The trolley is free and is a great way to spend a day between Ybor city, downtown Tampa, go along Tampa riverwalk and overall spend a relaxed time.

Tampa Riverwalk

Take a walk along the Tampa Riverwalk that stretches 2.6 miles along the Hillsborough River and was voted one of the top 15 river crossings in the United States. And  no wonder! Head upstream and you’ll find a fantastic array of  parks, museums, water attractions, festivals, family restaurants and bars.

Things to do in Tampa

Tampa Museum Of Art

A major tourist attraction in Tampa, it was established in 1989 and  is known for collecting, preserving, and hoarding over 5,000 priceless artifacts of various origins and types. The museum, as I wrote earlier, houses a collection of more than 5,000 works by various craftsmen . This museum is the quintessential educational treasure trove for those seeking scientific enrichment. People come to this museum to learn, as a tourist this is the right place to host a series of workshops, lectures and lectures. 

Take a walk on Tampa’s Riverwalk which is a boardwalk that runs along a river with beautiful fountains and other interesting landmarks. The main attractions are the Aquarium, the Channelside Bay Plaza, a WWII American ship, and other major attractions.

Tampa Theatre

The Tampa Theatre is a historic U.S. theater and city landmark in Downtown Tampa, Florida. Designed as an atmospheric theatre-style movie palace by architect John Eberson, it opened on October 15, 1926. The theatre features a wide range of independent, foreign, and documentary films.

Tampa Aquarium

This aquarium has more than 20,000 different species of aquatic animals and plants. This aquarium also hosts animals from around the world, interactive sessions conducted at the aquarium, and these interactive sessions include a glass and wetland exhibit designed to bring you an aquatic life experience.

Busch Gardens

This African-themed amusement park offers thrilling roller coasters, exotic animals, and live entertainment.

Lowry Park Zoo

This family-friendly zoo features over 1,300 animals, interactive exhibits, and a petting zoo.

Tampa is located near several beautiful beaches, including Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach, and Treasure Island. Spend a day relaxing in the sun and swimming in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Tampa Fun Facts

The famous cigar-making industry.  Tampa dates back to the late 1800s, and the city was once known as the “Cigar Capital of the World.” Today, Ybor City, a neighborhood in Tampa, is home to many of the city’s historic cigar factories.

Tampa has many nicknames. Tampa is also called Cigar City because of the cigar production that took place in Ybor City. Another nickname of Tampa is The Big Guava.  Steve Otto coined this name in the 1970s. This nickname comes from a combination of New York ‘s “ Big Apple ” moniker and a reference to businessman Gavino Gutierrez’s failed hunt for wild guava trees, which didn’t turn out good for Tampa’s growth.

The longest sidewalk is in Tampa. Bayshore Boulevard is considered world’s longest sidewalk. On its length of 4.5 long hauls(7.25 km), you ’ll hassle major palaces and multitudinous bikers, runners, walkers, and inline skaters.
